Fine Spring We Are Having This Summer
As half the country complains of cold and snows, we in the desert are enjoying temps around 70 degrees with light sprinkles throught the day. This makes for the best conditions any Las Vegan could ask for. Sure beats the 100+ sun and wind.
Our order of new tires and rims came in this month and all carts go new hardware. To celebrate the occasion we decided to test them out on the local 1 mile Poverty Flats hill. As is common with NUDRS, what starts out as a test session often ends up as a race if enough people show up. So as 3 drivers lined up at the top of the hill the count was called and the race began.
Green Machine took the early lead in Rockstar as the others slowly rolled off the mild slope of the start line. Cobra in Mayhem edged for second but was then passed my Gram Torino in her Chick-in-Coupe. 1/2 way down and after the lazy "S" Cobra sped past Gram as he built momentum, but Green Machine was still far ahead and making good use of his early head start. In the last 1/10th of the mile Rockstar had given all the speed it could and Cobra passed for the win with little room for error. Chick-in-Coupe was closing in on Rockstar threatening to overtake as Green Machine rolled in for second to narrowly beat out Gram Torino.
Had the hill been 50 yards shorter or longer the polls would have been very different. With a little work to get more top end speed Rockstar would be almost unbeatable on this hill thanks to it's uncanny early start abilities. Chick-in-Coupe suffers from rolling resistance that just does not want to be worked out while it and Mayhem both need bodies to slip thru the air better.
Durring the fun runs John Deere showed a marked improvement in handleing but was not willing to challenge anyone to be first down the hill. Mostly this is due to the knobby tires both front and back that offer too much grip on the asphalt. The fact that it has the aerodynamic properties of a box of tuna cans does not help either.
1st - Cobra / Mayhem
2nd - Green Machine / Rockstar
3rd - Gram Torino / Chick-In-Coupe
