Race 15, beach bum
Race 15, Beach Bum
We had a lot on our plates that day. After this race we had to run down to Oatman and Kingman for the CCC`14. This left very little time for tomfoolery.
Making their debut NUDRS appearances were The California Kid and Wreck, a father son team from Nevada City. One would race for the NUDRS trophy while the other raced in the CCC, all with the same cart, Wylie. Also making to their first race was Wabbit in T Bucket and Tito in Mini Indy (this name was given to his cart because he failed to mention one to us). This brought our attendance up to a record high of 10 carts!
Before we could get started a park ranger showed up to investigate our activities. After explaining who we were and what we were doing he allowed us to continue down the hill. He even followed us as a chase vehicle to ensure our safety. Thanks, Ranger Rick.
The line up was the usual reverse start with the point leaders and newbies at the back and the pole position given to the slower carts. As the run began a pack of 5 carts shot ahead, Johnny Dog in the lead followed by Tin Man, Wreck , and Tito, all in tight formation. Behind them were Cobra, Quaker Chevelle, Wormy, Bollywood, Wabbit, and Gram Torino.
As the carts reached speed Quaker settled in at 5th and Tito began to climb in the ranks. Tin Man took the lead as Johnny Dog kept right on him and Tito and Wreck took up spots behind. Cobra finally overcame his slow start and gradually overtook Wreck, Tito, and then Johnny Dog one at a time. In the back Wormy found Rat Fink to be rolling much slower than expected and ended up battling Bollywood all the way down the course for 7th as John Deere threatened to overtake him a number of times but could not quite pull the off the feat. Gram Torino held off Wabbit for a while, but eventually even the T Bucket got the best of the ailing Chick-in-Coupe which settled in for last again.
Tin Man held on to the lead with Extreme Green longer than anyone would have thought. It took Cobra some time to catch, draft, and then pass with Mayhem but pass him he did. Much to Cobra's surprise Tin Man soon came back by keeping in his draft and picking up enough speed to pass him back. Mean while Tito Wreck and Johnny Dog all kept a close race for 3rd. It wasn't until Wreck made contact with the back of Tito that Wreck lost his momentum and Johnny Dog was able to slip passed and in behind Tito. It was very close but Mini Indy kept a slight lead on Skeletor as the cone went by.
Meanwhile in the battle for first with Extreme Green in front, Cobra pulled the same stunt on Tin Man and retook his lead but later lost it again toward the bottom of the hill in the twisty section. With only a few hundred feet left before the finish Cobra crept up on Tin Man until they were side by side. As the cone came rushing up on them the nose of Mayhem poked out a couple inches ahead of Extreme Green's for the win.
In what was undeniably the best finish in NUDRS history Cobra retook the trophy and the season points standings leaving Tin Man to claim 2nd. Tito, Johnny Dog, and Wreck in an equally impressive melee were soon to follow as was Quaker who crossed in a brilliant slide across the line. Wormy finished with Bollywood close behind from a close battle at the back of the pack. Wabbit had stretched his lead on Gram Torino whom we had thought had gotten lost.
