Race 13, 01/01/14, Moroni's Revenge
And Then There Were Seven
New Years Day of 2014 saw the largest gathering of NUDRS to date bringing the racing total to 7. Our previous best was merely 5 when Wormy brought his new cart Rat Fink to the 2013 season closer at El Camino Del Diablo. Well they returned again with improvements to the hotrod inspired cart as well was to Tin Man's newly acquired Rockstar, renamed Extreme Green. But those were not the only new faces to show for the run. Quaker Chevelle brought his new Dodge Daytona bodied cart named Hawaiian Punch. It was a big hit with it's retro drink decals for which it was named and sported an impressive low profile roll bar. Johnny was our surprise contender showing up with his new yellow monstrosity. For lack of a better name we called it Baja Barbie for it's high ground clearance, off road tires, and 4 wheel suspension and for the bight cheerfulness of the yellow paint it wore. Johhny is welcome to change the name at any time, it is rather silly. And then there is Bollywood, a long time friend of Wormy and Tin Man who drove John Deere, our only remaining loaner cart.
So with the race about to start we sent our course helpers out to the intersections below to look out for traffic and warn of any potential automobiles who might wander toward our fun and games. Cobra, Wormy, and Gram Torino lined up in the back while Bollywood, Quaker Chevelle, Tin Man, and Johnny took pole. As the race started Cobra passed Tin Man and took the lead with Wormy close behind them both. As the crowd rounded the first and most formidable turn the front runners kept right on each other as they snaked their way down through the old neighborhood of Las Vegas. As the race neared the end it was Cobra who crossed first and was closely chased by Wormy and then by Tin Man. Quaker Chevelle and Johnny soon followed as Gram Torino and Bollywood brought up the rear.
For most of us it was the first time running this course, and for some it was the first time running at all. Johnny and Bollywood did very well for their first time out and Quaker Chevelle's cart did much better than anticipated. Over all, it was a very exciting race followed by 2 more fun runs.
Eventually the city began to awaken from it's New Years Eve hang over and the local 5-Oh was spotted the next street over. It was decided it was time to pack up and take our toys home before we wore out our welcome.
